Let’s be honest. Now that we’ve had a year of sweats, can we ever go back? These stretchy, warm pants have become worth their weight in gold. Sweatpants are typically loose-fit pants that are made from cotton or polyester. How much of each fabric you want in a pair of sweatpants depends on preferential factors like thickness, warmth, and fit.

The rise of athleisure wear also plays a factor in choosing the perfect sweatpants, as it’s increased the sheer variety of new styles. Also take into consideration whether or not you want sweatpants or joggers, as they have a lot of similarities. Sweatpants tend to be thicker and fit loosely, while joggers tend to have thinner material and have a more structured fit. However, that’s not to say there aren’t joggers made with thick cotton and vice versa.

So, what makes a great pair of sweatpants? Ask 100 people, get 100 answers. Generally speaking, what you want to look for when online shopping is fabric, fit, and cut. If your primary concern is how you look, then you’ll want to take a closer look at the color or print, as well.

Factors to Consider When Buying Sweatpants

Fabric – Sweatpants made with 100% cotton are considered more comfortable, but if you’re looking for more durability, you may want to look at a higher level of polyester in the blend.

Fit – The thickness of the fabric and percentage of blend will sometimes affect how sweatpants fit. If you’re buying 100% cotton, be mindful that it may shrink in the first wash. Make sure to double check if the elastic band comes with a drawstring.

Promising Review: I don’t know why anyone would spend more than ten bucks on sweatpants. ahem, excuse me, athletic wear. These are the best sweatpants ever. fleecy feeling soft goodness on the inside and perfect charcoal gray on the outside. (In the case of my order anyway.) These fit perfect with the drawstring on the inside to make them snug in case you overload the pockets. Yes! Pockets. Yay! Why does anyone make sweats without someplace to put your keys and your mp3 player/ iPhone/whatever?

These fit great and my wife loves that they don’t have ‘saggy butt syndrome’ like some sweatpants. I got the mediums and the sizing is perfect, by the way. I was a little nervous, but went with the site recommendation. Waist and length are great. My inseam is about a 32″ and these are right on! no dragging on the ground and they reach all the way past my shoes, so if there is a flood, I am not prepared. Will have to roll them up. (that’s a good thing.) Will definitely revisit and buy again. Shipping was also fast and excellent packaging.

Best Basics with a Variety of Colors

Amazon Essentials Men’s Sweatpants

These Amazon brand pants are great if you’re looking for basics with a wider range of colors. Amazon basics are known to fine-tune their products based on the marketplace’s bestsellers, so it’s got all the popular features like elastic closure, straight leg fit, drawstring waistband, and side pockets.

Promising Review: These are heavy weight sweats. They are much better quality than I expected. Seams are serged as I expected, but the operator made sure the threads were nicely aligned with the edge of the cloth and straight. I don’t know sewing terminology so I’ll drop in a couple photos.

The pant legs are open, not elastic, which means I can wear them when I’m running errands. The deep side-seam pockets are reinforced at top and bottom. I’m ready for winter workouts! – Amazon customer

Best Lightweight Sweatpants

Champion Men’s Closed Bottom Lightweight Jersey Sweatpants

These Champion closed bottom sweatpants are great if you need something to wear around casually. Because they’re lightweight with a thin elastic bottom, you’ll get that classic look and feel of sweats, but not as much of the bulk. They’re 100% cotton, so be mindful that they may shrink after the first wash.

Promising Review: I’ve tried several different sweatpants over the years and having used them at the gym, for playing badminton, as sleep/daily wear, etc. I’ve come down to some key requirements. These are probably the only sweatpants that fit all of them:

1. full-loop inner drawstring at the waist (full-loop: not a split drawstring that could get twisted in the dryer or lost in the seam by mistake; I don’t even tie it – just pull it a bit and leave the rest to the elastic in the seam) (inner: not an outer drawstring that would lurk from under my gym t-shirt)

2. comfy ankle elastic (comfy: not a tight-fit at the ankle – so it’s easy to pull on and off especially after an exhausting workout/game) (elastic: not a drawstring at the ankles that I would have to constantly conscious about while moving around in the gym or any new place I go to)

3. light-weight material (it’s not heavy and/or warm – just ok to keep the cold at bay but it’s not built for that)

4. not-irritable (and polyester irritates you, these come in a color variant with more cotton)

5. have held up pretty well over 6 months of constant use and machine wash+dry (may have faded a bit but the discoloration must have been uniform to have gone quite unnoticed (talking solely about the granite heather variant – haven’t tried the others)) and look like they’ll last me at least a year.

Considering that I am very lazy at writing reviews, I must say I’m a very satisfied customer. I’m ordering 2 more of these sweatpants since even after 6 months I could not find another product to match my sort of specific requirements. If only they came with a length option I would have ordered some for my dad, who wears the same waist but is shorter in height and such closed-ankle sweatpants cannot be altered like the open-ankle ones. PUMA’s essential fleece sweatpants are a bit pricier, but they are made with thicker cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative, which promotes better cotton farming practices. You’ll get the side benefit of knowing that your pants are more thoughtfully sourced. They also have a more structured fit with tapered legs and a thick bottom ankle band.

Promising Review: Sized right, they stay up, and they are nice and thick. My husband loves them – he wears them walking outside in the cold.

Promising Review: I usually wear yoga pants to walk my dog but even fleece lined yoga pants still made my thighs feel really cold, which is usually the only thing that gets cold because I am otherwise very bundled up well. I needed something that would work in the Minnesota winters under 20 degrees. So when I started looking around at something else to wear that weren’t snow pants, I did find some snoga pants that looked good but were $150. I considered ski pants but even they make that swooshing sound when I walk and are just too heavy for walking the dog.

If you can’t live without your cargo pants, the Pro Club’s fleece sweatpants are a great option. These sweatpants have large utility pockets with Velcro flaps, wide legs, and an elastic drawstring waistband. There’s also a drawstring on the ankle closure that’s handy for cinching and rolling the pant legs up.

Promising Review: If you are on the tall side like me it can be difficult trying to find sweat pants that actually fit. Look no further, these are definitely the ones to order. If you buy normal 2x at the store what sucks about that is the waste line. You end up getting that size so the length works but have to put up them looking too bunched up at the top. Not these. They fit perfectly and look like they were tailored almost. They do come a bit long but you can tighten them at the bottom just right to fit the top of your shoes so you can still have the baggy or sporty look without them dragging the ground.
