2nd bagel-shop robbery in New Springville in 2 days; bandit hops counter, places sharp object against worker
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A suspect jumped over a counter, pressed an object to a worker’s back and demanded money in a frightening robbery at a bagel shop in New Springville on Wednesday morning.
The second robbery of a bagel store in that community in as many days began at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday inside Richmond Bagels & Deli on Richmond Hill Road near Richmond Avenue, according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
A worker told police that he was on duty when the suspect entered the store and asked for a pack of Newport cigarettes. When the employee turned around to grab the cigarettes, the culprit hopped over the counter and made an unsuccessful attempt to open the register, the police spokesman said.
The robber then pressed an unknown object wrapped in a white bag against the worker’s back.
“Give me the money,” the suspect told the worker, according to the police report.
The worker opened the register and the suspect grabbed an unknown amount of cash.
The culprit jumped back over the counter and fled the location on foot southbound on Richmond Hill Road, the police spokesman said.
The individual sought by police for questioning is described as a white male standing about 5′8′′ tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing a black hoodie and Adidas pants of navy blue with white stripes on the sides, black sneakers, a dark-colored mask with white stripes, and blue gloves.
The worker was not injured.
No arrests have been made and the investigation continues, the police spokesman said.
Police called a “level-one” mobilization, indicated a large search for the suspect.
2ND INCIDENT IN COMMUNITY IN 2 DAYS
On Tuesday, a man jumped over the counter, held what appeared to be a gun against the body of a worker and demanded cash in a terrifying robbery at another deli in New Springville, police said.
That incident occurred at about 1:55 a.m. at Nome Superette & Bagels, 452 Nome Ave. near Richmond Avenue, according to a spokeswoman for the NYPD.
A 61-year-old worker at Nome Superette told police that he was doing his job when a suspect entered the store, pushed over a plastic shield and jumped over the counter, the police spokeswoman said.
The suspect displayed an alleged firearm that was yellow in color with a brown bag wrapped around it. The culprit then put the apparent gun against the worker’s stomach and, based on the police report, said, “Open the register and give me all you have.”
The worker opened the register and the suspect removed at least $150 in cash, police said.
The culprit then fled on foot westbound on Steinway Avenue.
